What is CBD?
CBD is the latest wellness product that is now included in a huge range of products from coffee to water to face creams and CBD gummies, and a whole lot more besides.
As it’s fairly new and comes from the cannabis plant, many people are still unsure whether it will get them high or whether it will show up in a drug test. So below we’ll answer those and a few more questions, to help you feel happy and safe that CBD products are totally safe, non-psychoactive and legit.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, a chemical compound from the Cannabis sativa plant, which is also known as marijuana or hemp. THC on the other hand is the compound that gets you high.
CBD, THC, hemp, marijuana…..it can all be confusing right! The plant Cannabis sativa has two main species, hemp and marijuana. Both of these contain CBD. However hemp contains high levels of CBD and low levels of THC (less than 0.3%), whilst with marijuana it’s the other way around – low levels of CBD and high levels of THC. Therefore in CBD products it’s usually hemp that is used for its high levels of CBD.
CBD’s popularity can be attributed to its many possible health benefits, including reducing inflammation and pain, anxiety and stress relief, aiding better sleep, reducing epilepsy seizures, pain relief, depression relief and improving neurological disorders. The medical community is still conducting its research on the definitive health benefits but it’s clear that many consumers swear by it, and find CBD a great help in terms of health and wellness.
What is Hemp?
Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial and other uses. It is used to make a wide range of products such as fabric, clothing, bags, cosmetics such as hemp pain relief cream and lip balm, nutritional supplements, rope, printer’s ink, wood preservative, detergents, soaps, and lighting oil, to name a few.
Hemp flowers, leaves, seed, seed oil, and protein are used as food and/or medicine. It’s used for a number of health conditions including high cholesterol, inflammation/pain, eczema, psoriasis, arthritis and other conditions.
Is Hemp the Same as Marijuana?
Although hemp and marijuana are derived from the same plant, cannabis sativa, they are distinct strains with very different levels of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), which is what causes the ‘high.’
Marijuana contains a lot more THC than hemp, while hemp boasts more CBD (cannabidiol). In terms of the percentage, industrial hemp has less than 0.3% THC. To put it simply, hemp can’t get you high.
Is Hemp Extract a Psychoactive Ingredient?
The substance that gets you high is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), and as hemp extract only contains miniscule amounts of THC, it cannot make you high. Basically, hemp extract is not psychoactive.
CBD Oil vs Hemp Extract Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil
With CBD and hemp products everywhere you look thesedays, one of the things that can get confusing is the terms CBD, hemp extract as well as hemp seed oil which can be used interchangeably. But there are differences, so let’s unravel those in brief, simple terms.
CBD and hemp comes from the same plant, Cannabis sativa, but from different parts of it.
CBD oil is extracted from the stalks, stems, and flowers but is not found in the seeds. The seeds are used to produce hemp seed oil.
Hemp seed oil and hemp oil are pretty much synonymous.
What are Hemp Edibles?
Some hemp edibles and gummies contain CBD, or cannabidiol, a compound derived from the natural hemp plant. CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids that are found in hemp, the other well-known cannabinoid is THC.
CBD edibles can originate from hemp or from marijuana. Nectar’s edibles derive from hemp, as these are the only ones legal in the UK.
What’s the Difference Between Hemp Seed Oil and CBD oil?
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are both made from the cannabis plant. CBD oil is derived from the flowers, leaves, and stems, whilst hemp seed oil is oil extracted from hemp seeds.
Are CBD Edibles Legal in the UK?
Yes, CBD edibles are completely legal to buy and use in the UK. They are only legal in the UK if the finished product contains less than 1mg of THC. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for getting users ‘high’. The level of THC in products containing hemp seed and CBD oils are very low (less than 0.3%), if any, and are not therefore psychoactive.
Does CBD Show Up On a Drug Test?
CBD shouldn’t show up on a drug test, though on rare occasions it could do if the CBD product contains trace amounts of THC. So you should only buy trusted CBD products and do check the % of THC in the product.
