What is CBD?

CBD and hemp-infused products have become all the rage recently. You can see these products online, in health shops and even on supermarket shelves. In terms of the types of products available, there is a large variety of ways you can ingest CBD and gain the benefits. These range from oils, lotions and edibles, to water, coffee and capsules.

CBD is derived from the cannabis plant so many people are still unsure about CBD, for example if it will get you high or if it will show up on a drug test. Below you’ll find some information to help clarify these questions, to help you feel confident with taking CBD. 

CBD, which is short for cannabidiol, is one of over 113 naturally-occurring chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa, which is also known as marijuana or hemp. CBD belongs to a class of molecules called cannabinoids. The highest concentrations of cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant are CBD and THC.  

Let’s put some context around all these terms: CBD, THC, hemp, marijuana. The plant Cannabis sativa has two main strains: hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD. The difference is in the levels of these two cannabinoids CBD and THC. Whereas hemp contains high levels of CBD and low levels of THC (less than 0.3%), marijuana contains low levels of CBD and high levels of THC.

CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is a complex system that regulates and balances many of the body’s processes, including immune response, metabolism, inflammation response, memory, and more. By stimulating the endocannabinoid system CBD promotes homeostasis or wellness in the body.

What Are the Benefits of CBD?

Is CBD Psychoactive?

CBD does not have any psychoactive properties, and therefore CBD oil or extract is considered safe to use on a daily basis. CBD works with the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for keeping the body in homeostasis.

Does CBD Have Any Side Effects?

What is Hemp?

Hemp, also known as industrial hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant and is specifically grown for industrial and many other uses. It’s used in making a wide range of commercial products such as cloth, clothes, bags, skincare such as hemp pain relief creams, lip balms, supplements, rope, cleaning products such as soaps – to name just a few.   

Hemp is considered beneficial for a number of health conditions including high cholesterol, inflammation, pain, eczema, psoriasis, arthritis and other ailments.

Is Hemp the Same as Marijuana?

Hemp and marijuana come from the same plant (Cannabis sativa) but they are different strains of cannabis with very different levels of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) – it’s the THC that causes the ‘high.’

Hemp has a lot more CBD than marijuana and marijuana has a lot more THC than hemp. In percentage terms, industrial hemp has less than 0.3% THC. To put it simply, hemp can’t get you high.  As for CBD, hemp plants contain approximately 10% to 18%.

What Are Hemp Edibles?

Hemp edibles such as gummies contain CBD, a cannabinoid compound derived from the natural hemp plant. The other well-known cannabinoid is THC which is derived from a different strain of hemp.

CBD edibles can originate from either hemp or from marijuana. Nectar’s edibles derive from hemp, as these are the only ones that are legal in the UK. Our gummies are vegan-friendly, free of palm oil and diary and contain no artificial sweeteners, artificial colours or preservatives.

What’s the Difference Between Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil?

Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are both made from the same cannabis plant. CBD oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stems, whilst hemp seed oil is derived from the seeds. 

Are CBD Edibles Legal in the UK?

Yes, CBD edibles are legal to buy and use in the UK if the finished product contains less than 1mg of THC. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for getting you ‘high’. The level of THC in products containing hemp seed and CBD oils are extremely low – 0.3% or less, so they’re not going to get you high.  

Does CBD Show Up On a Drug Test?

Not if you buy a reputable product with negligible amounts of THC (it’s not legal anyway to have higher amounts of THC than 0.2% according in the UK). On rare occasions it could do, if the CBD product contains trace amounts of THC so you should only buy trusted CBD products and check the % of THC in the product.
