Reading time - 9 minutes - March 30, 2022

As you may be aware, the popularity of plant based milk has massively grown in the past few years. These days people are switching their usual milk for a healthier and more sustainable alternative – plant based milks. You have most likely heard of soy milk, almond milk, also oat milk; but have you heard of hemp milk? This plant based milk is said to be the most sustainable of its kind, so, let’s dig a little deeper and find out what exactly hemp milk is, what the benefits of it are and how we can make it ourselves.

What is Hemp Milk?

Hemp Milk is a plant based milk. It is made by blending the seeds of the hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa) with water. This plant can also produce weed, however, the hemp plant contains less than 0.3% of THC. Therefore, hemp milk, as well as any other products made from the hemp plant, do not cause mind-altering effects (a ‘high’) like weed does.

This milk has a nutty, earthy flavour paired with a creamy consistency – what’s not to love? Hemp milk can be substituted for cow’s milk in your everyday life, for example, in your breakfast cereal, coffee, smoothies and anything else that you use milk with really!

It can be made from just water and seeds, however many brands of hemp milk contain salt, thickeners or sweeteners too. As this milk is growing in popularity it can be found in most supermarkets and many places online. But if you’d like to try making it yourself then keep on reading.

What are the Benefits of Hemp Milk?

There really are endless benefits to this plant based milk. Not only is it incredibly sustainable but it also comes with a bunch of health benefits too! Hemp milk is packed with vitamins and nutrients that other milks don’t all have. Rather than going into all the benefits at once, we will go through each individual benefit this milk provides as there’s too much to narrow down!

Loaded with Nutrients & All Things Good

Hemp milk is a great source of:

It’s rich in calcium and contains all 10 essential amino acids you need to stay nice and healthy. Hemp milk has more Vitamin A than dairy, which some may find hard to believe! It is also rich in micronutrients like magnesium, zinc and phosphorus that promote bone health, reduce inflammation, build immunity, improve memory, maintain kidney function and much more.

Unlike many other plant based milks, hemp milk is packed with Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. These increase “good” HDL cholesterol in your body, protect your heart and lower blood pressure. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids also help fight depression, prevent dementia and aid brain development in babies.

Scientific studies have shown that the Vitamin B2 (also known as riboflavin) in hemp milk lowers the frequency of migraine headaches. Riboflavin supplements have been recommended as a safe alternative to medications for treating migraines, so who knew hemp milk could be the answer?

This milk source also loves your eyes, skin and bones! Who knew drinking milk could make you better looking? Well, a study of over 4000 middle-aged women from the US, showed that regular consumption of Omega – 6 fatty acids resulted in fewer wrinkles and lower chances of developing thin, dry skin. The Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids in hemp milk, help your skin look fresher and younger, even as the years go by. Also, just to let you know – dairy is considered a poor source of Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids, just saying.

Many people say they can’t make the switch from dairy to plant based milks because they ‘don’t have enough calcium or nutrients’, well… Did you know that a cup of hemp milk has the same amount of bone building calcium in it as one cup of dairy? Also, most hemp milks are fortified with Vitamin D, helping your body to absorb the calcium even better! The high phosphorus content in hemp milk also builds stronger bones as it adds to bone density.

The Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) we mentioned earlier protects your eyes and delays cataracts. It also gives you an extra boost of energy because it helps to process carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the body.

It’s Good for the Planet!

As we mentioned before, milks more sustainable than this one are hard to come by. The hemp plant is naturally resistant to bugs and pests. Meaning that farmers don’t need to use harmful chemicals and pesticides that pollute the water and soil. Unlike many other crops, hemp grows thick and fast in most soil types, needing very little fertilizer and relatively little water to grow.

This beautiful plant is also it’s own little eco-warrior, combating global warming. It does this by absorbing more carbon dioxide by weight than any other plant, forest or commercial crop. Scientific data proves that one tonne of hemp absorbs 1.63 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

Another huge bonus that this plant offers is that every single part of the hemp plant can be used for different commercial purposes. This includes its seeds, leaves, stalk, roots and flowers. Can you imagine that Hemp can actually be used for over 50,000 different uses? From rope and paper to shampoos, carpets, and more. Read more on what hemp can be used for and why it is one of the most versatile crops.

Hemp farming generates less waste than other crops, making hemp milk more eco-friendly than other plant-based milks!

It Tastes Great! (Even in Hot Drinks)

Hemp milk has a deliciously light and nutty flavour, it is also creamy which is what is important to some people. Another great bonus is that it doesn’t split in hot drinks. This is an issue that many people find with other plant-based milks, but not with hemp!

If you have tried any plant based milks before, then you may have found that they taste a little watery, often grainy and can have a strong aftertaste. Again, not with hemp milk! Unlike most other dairy substitutes, hemp milk is thick and creamy, just like cow’s milk. It is definitely not a sad watery excuse for milk where the solids settle at the bottom leaving a murky liquid above like others.

It’s the perfect base for creamy milkshakes or smoothies. Unsweetened hemp milk also works great in place of dairy for baking and did you know that hemp tofu exists? Hemp tofu is a much tastier alternative to soy tofu. So, go ahead and try to incorporate this wonderful milk alternative into your daily life. Splash a little in your coffee, cook with it, you can do anything you like with it really as it is so versatile!

Another amazing thing about hemp milk that is worth a mention is the fact that it is safe for allergen free diets. Hemp milk is completely free of the top 8 most common allergens. You may have noticed almond or soy milk offered in coffee shops in place of dairy. However, neither of them make the cut for individuals with nut allergies. Even though hemp milk is derived from the hemp seed, it is completely safe for nut allergy sufferers.

How to Make Hemp Milk

You honestly wouldn’t believe how easy it is to make your own hemp milk. Once you try it out you’ll be asking yourself why more people aren’t doing it.

By making it yourself, you can avoid unnecessary additives or thickeners that can be found in many commercial varieties.

To make your own hemp milk, combine 68 grams (1/2 a cup) of raw hulled hemp seeds with 710–946 ml (3 – 4 cups) of water. You can use less water to make a creamier milk. Mix together in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth (which takes about a minute).

Once blended, try a small spoon to test the sweetness/flavour. If necessary you can add some other ingredients to enhance the flavour. Some ingredients you can add are sea salt, vanilla extract, maple syrup, dates or honey to taste.

Once everything is combined and you are happy with the taste, strain your hemp milk using a cheesecloth, nut milk bag or very thin towel for a smoother result. Store your hemp milk in a sealed container in your fridge for up to five days. Make sure to keep it refrigerated.

And, that’s it! Now you can easily make your own hemp milk whenever necessary for a fraction of the price.
