What is the best temperature to vape weed?

Reading time - 10 minutes - July 13, 2022

In recent years, vaping has become popular all over the world and particularly here in the UK. Vaporizers are now being used to consume tobacco, nicotine, and increasingly, cannabis. There are a huge number of reasons to explain why vaping has become so popular (don’t worry, we will touch on these later!), but there are also a lot of questions regarding how it works. One of the most common questions being: What is the best temperature to vape weed?

We’re going to walk you through everything you need to know to get the best out of your cannabis vaporizer – including guiding you through the best practices when it comes to temperature settings. So, let’s get into it!

How does vaping weed actually work?

Before we answer our star question, it is important to understand how weed vaporizers actually work. Cannabis vaporizers are designed to offer an alternative to smoking. To this end, these battery-powered devices effectively but gently heat your weed until it gives off a vapor – without burning the plant material. The resulting vapor, therefore, contains less of the toxic ingredients that are associated with smoking. This also means that the vapor is smoother and less abrasive than smoke, giving you a more pleasant experience.

As vaporizing weed doesn’t combust the product, many of the active ingredients are more effectively preserved. As a result, terpenes and cannabinoids are delivered more efficiently, allowing you to make the most of your product. In comparison, the extent of the heat that is applied when smoking can destroy many of these compounds, and therefore the effects of your weed.

Dry Herb Vaporizers

When using a weed vaporizer, the weed is placed in the battery-powered heating chamber, ready to be heated. This chamber is usually made from glass, ceramic, or stainless steel and the heating element is most often made from ceramic. You will then be able to set your temperature and apply heat at the touch of a button – or sometimes, simply by inhaling through the mouthpiece of the vaporizer. And that’s it – it really is that easy!

Vaporizing weed takes out all the guesswork when it comes to consuming your weed. You are in complete control of your product and what happens to it, thanks to precision temperature control. It also offers the added benefit of waving ‘goodbye’ to fiddly rolling papers and all the negatives that come along with smoking.

So, now that we’re covered with the basics, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of weed vaporizers and temperature settings…

How do you set the temperature on your weed vaporizer?

When you purchase your first dry herb vaporizer, the device can appear relatively complicated. But fear not, our devices could not be easier to use. There are just a few things you need to know when setting up your weed vaporizer – how to fill the chamber, how to set the temperature, and how to inhale your vapor.

Once you have ground your botanical to the desired consistency (not too fine) it is time to place it in the heating chamber of your device. You will want to pack the product down to restrict movement in the chamber, but not so tight as to restrict airflow. Then you can set your temperature. Our devices feature precision heating which allows you to adjust your temperature up to the precision of 1°C! This is easily done by pressing the ‘up’ and ‘down’ temperature buttons on the device. The temperature setting will be clearly displayed on the digital screen, giving you perfect control over the vaporization of your herb.

Temperature Ranges

The temperature ranges of our vaporizers depend on the specific product in question. For example, our NECTAR V2 VAPORIZER can be heated to a maximum of 225°C. In comparison, our NECTAR GOLD VAPORIZER and NECTAR PLATINUM VAPORIZER can heat up to 240°C. All of our products heat up to 180°C in less than one minute – our platinum offering even heats up in as little as 24 seconds. This fast reaction time offers our customers fast and efficient vaping and full control over their product.

When comparing vaping to smoking, there is a huge difference in the maximum temperature. In fact, it is common that your weed will reach temperatures of up to 2200°C when it is burned in the traditional way. As we mentioned earlier, such high temperatures can actually destroy many of the active ingredients in your product before you even have the chance to consume them. By comparison, the lower temperatures applied when vaping mean that your product lasts longer, giving you the opportunity to really enjoy and feel the benefits of your product.

What is the best temperature to vape weed?

So, time to get to answering our main question. What is the best temperature for vaping weed? Well, unfortunately, the answer to this isn’t as straightforward as actually setting the temperature on your device. There are a huge number of variables that can affect the optimum temperature for vaping your weed.

For starters, as we are all individuals, it is inevitable that we will have different preferences and requirements when it comes to vaping. While some people might favour a richer and more diverse flavour, others will prioritise stronger effects. Furthermore, different products can have different levels of active ingredients – such as cannabinoids and terpenes – all of which will volatilise at different temperatures.

Therefore, finding your own optimum temperature setting can take some time, patience, and playing around. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through the basics and tell you everything you need to know to find the best temperature to vape weed.

How do different temperatures affect your product?

The first thing you should consider when trying to identify the best vaping temperature is what you want from your product. As a general rule, vaporizing at lower temperatures is associated with a rounder, fuller flavour, whereas higher temperatures tend to give a stronger effect. Figuring out what is most important to you is a good starting point when testing out different temperatures.

Starting Low

Some of the organic compounds in your product, such as CBG, which has a boiling point of as low as 52°C, will volatilise at relatively low temperatures. However, the majority of cannabinoids won’t begin to volatilise until temperatures reach between 120-220°C. For example, the boiling point of THC – the main psychoactive compound in cannabis – is purported to be around 157°C. It is, therefore, unlikely that you will want to use temperatures any lower than this if you want to feel the effects of your product.

In the grand scheme of things, though, this is a relatively low temperature. When vaporizing at low temperatures (e.g., up to 180°C), you will inhale a cooler, smoother vapor that is less harsh on the throat. It is also possible that vaping at lower temperatures will reduce the risk of experiencing unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness and dry mouth. Vaporizing your weed at lower temperatures will also mean it will last longer.

A top tip if you prefer to vape at lower temperatures – if your bud is still green-ish, or even light brown, after your initial vaping session, it likely has more to give! Your product likely still contains effective cannabinoids waiting to be utilised. You can also use the colour test to determine when your product is expired and, therefore, needs replacing. Once you have got the most out of your herb, it will turn dark brown or even black – time to restock!

All in all, starting at lower temperatures is a good idea when feeling out what suits you best – particularly if you are new to vaping.

Increasing the temperature

As you begin to incrementally increase the temperature setting on your dry herb vaporizer, you will begin to experience the effects of different compounds. For example, CBD is believed to reach its boiling point at around 180°C. Therefore, you will need to set your device to at least this temperature (though likely higher) if you are looking to experience the benefits of this cannabinoid.

The mid-range point when it comes to vaporizing is generally considered to apply to temperatures of around 175-205°C. It is at this point that the majority of both cannabinoids and terpenes begin to volatilised, giving you a diverse and effective vaping experience. This is a great middle-ground which is ideal for when you are experimenting with the effects at different temperatures. You will likely achieve a good balance between taste and effect as more active compounds will be working together to deliver a satisfactory result.

The vapor produced at these temperatures will be thicker, warmer, and more intense; however, it is unlikely that it will be strong or hot enough to cause significant irritation.

Maximum temperatures

For most vaporizers, the maximum temperature will be more than enough to accommodate the results you are looking for. On many devices, like our NECTAR V2 VAPORIZER, the maximum temperature is 220°C. However, premium vaporizers can reach temperatures of 240°C, giving you a diverse range to play with to find the perfect setting for you.

At the higher end of the temperature spectrum (205-220°C+), you will achieve maximum cannabinoid extraction. This will mean more prominent results, faster; however, the flavour and smoothness of the vapor are usually sacrificed to some extent. Furthermore, these temperatures are likely to deplete the terpenes in your product much faster than at lower temperatures. This might be a drawback for some people, but again, everyone is different!

These temperatures are the highest you can get to combustion without releasing the harmful materials that come with it. Vaping at higher temperatures is, therefore, the closest resemblance to smoking your product – it is up to you whether that is the effect you are after.
