Rosin Pressing Recommendations

Temperature and Time

  • Dry Sift – Prime temperature: 74C to 90C, Heating time: 60s to 130s
  • Flower – prime temperature: 87C to 105C, Heating time: 30 to 220s

Filter Bag Size

  • 25U* – Fine materials such as dry sift
  • 100U* – Flower; results in best filtration and highest quality output with some reduction in yield

Rosin Press Machine – What Does it Do?

A rosin press machine extracts a waxy sap from whatever starting material you use. It does this by using heat and pressure which liquefies the plant’s essential oils into a sticky resinous wax.

Since rosin press machines are relatively simple and safe to use at home, they are seeing growing demand in the market. Another main reason for their popularity is that they don’t use solvents, which have many downsides. Moreover, rosin can confidently rival the potency, yield and flavour of extraction products using a solvent-based method.

The Nectar Pollen Press…

A comprehensive instruction manual comes with the Pollen press, so even if you’re new to making rosin, you’ll have all the instructions you need to get started quickly. In the meantime, here are some tips and how-to’s.

Filter Bag Size Guide

rosin press filter bag size guide

For pressing your material less than 7g, we recommend using nylon rather than filter bags since some material will stick to the bags, and this will avoid reducing your yield.

Polyester bags shrink with heat and could cause blowouts.

Unless you double or triple press the same material, filter bags are one-time use only.

Temperature and Time

Cold pressing
160°F to 190°F (70℃ – 87℃)
1 – 5 mins
Produces a batter-like malleable consistency terpene-rich rosin.
There is a sacrifice in yield.

Hot pressing
190°F to 225°F (87℃ – 105℃)
40 seconds – 3 mins
Produces a shatter-like or sappy rosin.
Higher yield than with cold pressing.

With higher temperatures you’ll get higher yields but over 225°F will lead to a drop in quality and terpenes. To maintain the terpenes, press at 210 or below. Flower can be started at 200°F / 93°C for 85 – 125 seconds. Here’s a quick temperature / time reference table:

Herb Material

To produce optimal yields and quality of rosin, it is best to opt for plant material harvested within 2 to 6 weeks of pressing.

Pre-pressing allows you to have a condensed brick / puck of material that you can then press, in order to increase the yield.

NB: Yield is the amount of rosin produced as a ratio of material used.

Note that the Nectar rosin press machine doesn’t come with a pre-press mould so you may wish to purchase one to produce greater yield.

How to Use the Pre-press Mould

  1. Take apart the pre-press mould
  2. Place the mould cylinder onto the mould platform
  3. If using flower, grind up your starting material
  4. Drop the herb into the mould cylinder. We suggest a minimum of 1g of flower
  5. Avoid placing too much material in the filter bag as this could make the filter bag blowout, reducing your yield
  6. Once you have your herb ‘brick’, place it into a filter bag and fold over any excess filter bag to ensure it’s tightly packed
  7. You can now place the filter bag (with the brick inside it) into a parchment paper sheet folded in half and place it between the platens. Now you’re ready to press!

Benefits of DIY Rosin Pressing

DIY rosin pressing provides a number of attractive benefits.

  1. Solvent-free extraction – A main benefit of diy rosin pressing is that no solvent is needed in the extraction process, unlike other methods where additives such as butane are used. The end extract / concentrate is therefore more natural and cleaner, something that is becoming more important to people who want to avoid the risks that chemicals pose.
  2. Quick and simple to use – Using a diy rosin press machine is quick and simple once you get the hang of it. It only takes minutes to make rosin and the process is not complicated.
  3. Concentrated potency – Rosin offers great potency so a little bit goes a long way. The effects can take hold quickly too, so it’s best to gauge dosage gradually.
  4. Safer – When using a solvent-based extraction method, much caution is needed. Butane for example, is a volatile substance, being highly flammable and can sometimes explode. Therefore to not have to use any such solvents is a huge plus point with diy rosin press machines. No risks of injury or explosion and all from the comfort of your own home.
  5. Versatile – Rosin has many uses – use it in your dry herb vaporizer, make edibles with it, or why not try making your own topicals with it such as skin creams.
  6. Use it immediately – There’s no need to wait before you use your rosin.

So as you can see, rosin pressing offers many benefits – and compared to the solvent-based methods, it’s healthier, safer, potent, simple, quick and versatile.

If you want a pollen press with bigger plates and higher temperatures check out our
Nectar Pollen Twist. It has a plate size of 6cm x 12cm and temperatures up to 250°c, and is suitable for those who want a press that fits onto a counter-top and don’t want to hook up an air compressor.
