  • The Nectar Pre Press Mould has been particularly designed to maximise the yield of your rosin press. It's a common misconception with pre press moulds that the bigger they are the better they are but this misconception couldn't be any further away from the truth!

    Maximum Yield

Since 'Compressive Force' = 'Force' (Rosin Press) divided by 'Area' (Mould), then the smaller the area of your mould the larger the compressive force will be on your dry herb puck. The fact that this pre press mould has a diameter of just 3cm allows you to maximise the yield of your press due to the compressive force being maximised. Essentially, you don't need a bigger press, you just need a smaller mould so why spend more money when you can press some of the best rosin with less? The Nectar pre press mould is milled out of aluminium and finished with a brushed effect. Pre pressing your material will help you reduce blowouts and significantly improve your yields.

    Warranty

1-Year Warranty: 96% of people keep their Nectar device, but just in case we offer a 12 month limited warranty (extendable to 3 years at no charge), 14-day money back guarantee & 24/7 customer service.

What is Rosin?

Rosin is a concentrate that has a sap-like consistency. It’s derived by using a rosin press to apply heat and pressure to the starting plant material. Its main attraction is that unlike other methods that use solvents such as butane and propane, rosin presses don’t use any chemicals during the extraction process. This results in a rosin concentrate that’s solvent-less and pure – yet potent.

The good news is that even the best rosin can be produced easily and quickly from the comfort of your own home. As the demand for rosin has increased, rosin press machines have become more diversified and suitable for home-use, yet still supplying the effectiveness of industrial machines.  Nectar’s rosin presses are powerful enough for both home and commercial use.

What Does a Rosin Press Do?

A rosin press machine provides an efficient, effective and safe means of extracting rosin from starting materials. It’s a device or piece of equipment that combines extreme heat and pressure to force the dry herbs to liquify. This provides a very concentrated and potent concentrate.

A rosin press is also known as a pollen press machine, or a pollen press.

A manual rosin press is a versatile investment, as you can produce a variety of different products. The basic extract most think of when it comes to rosin is a translucent, sap-like concentrate.  However by varying the heat, pressure and time you can produce more dense extracts which have different hardness, shape, flavour and colour. A Nectar pollen press lends itself well to experimenting with extracts in this way.

Instruction Manual

When you purchase the Nectar Rosin Press, you’ll receive a comprehensive instruction manual to help you learn how to press rosin. Below we’ve added some tips to help you decide if rosin pressing is something you’d like to try, or to help you get the most out of your rosin press machine, if you already have one.

This information is also included in the Nectar Rosin Press instruction manual.

Filter Bag Size Guide

Here’s a guide to help you decide which mesh size (in microns) you should use for which type of materials.

rosin filter bag size guide

Since some of the output material will stick to the bags, we recommend to avoid using filter bags for pressing material weighing less than 7g, as this will cause a reduction in the yield.

Using nylon bags is better, as polyester bags shrink with heat and are likely to cause blowouts. Note that filter bags are one-time use only unless double or triple pressing the same material.

Controlling the Temperature of the Rosin Press Machine

Controlling rosin temperature is key to using a manual rosin press machine effectively.  If you use lower temperatures (65°C-105°C or 150°F- 220°F) you will have lower rosin yields, but more flavour and a more stable, butter-like consistency.

On the other hand, with higher temperatures (105°C-121°C or 220°F- 250°F) you’ll get greater rosin yields, but less flavour and a less stable, sap-like consistency.

Cold pressing (pressed at 160 °F to 190 °F  / 70 ℃ – 87 ℃ for 1 – 5 mins) produces a malleable, batter consistency terpene-rich rosin, though it does come with a sacrifice in yield.

Hot pressing (pressed at 190 °F to 225 °F  / 87 ℃ – 105 ℃ for 40 seconds – 3 mins) produces a sappy or shatter-like rosin. The higher the temperature, the higher yield you get, however anything over 225 °F tends to have a fair drop in quality and terpenes. To preserve terpenes, press at 210 or below. For flower, start pressing at 200 °F / 93 °C for 85 – 125 seconds and evaluate from there.

Here’s a quick rosin press machine temperature reference table:

Plant Material

For optimal yield and quality, it’s best to select plant material that has been harvested within 2 to 6 weeks of pressing.

Pre-Pressing Material

The Nectar rosin press machine does not come with a pre-press mould.  You may wish to purchase a pre-press mould to increase your yield further.

The reason for pre-pressing is to have a condensed brick / puck of material that you can then press – this increases the yield (the amount of rosin produced as a ratio of material used).

Using the Pre-Press Mould

  1. Take apart the pre-press mould and place the Mould Cylinder onto the Mould platform
  2. Grind up your starting material (if flower) and drop it into the Mould Cylinder. We suggest a minimum of 1g of flower
  3. Don’t put too much material in the filter bag as doing so could cause a filter bag blowout and reduce your yield
  4. Insert the puck / brick into a filter bag if used and then place this inside a folded parchment paper sheet and place it between the platens. Now you’re ready to press! Make sure to leave some space between the fold and the puck to avoid tearing the parchment paper during pressing

What is a Suitable Pressing Force for Pressing the Best Rosin?

The Nectar Pollen Press is capable of pressing around 1.5 tonnes. However, you should be looking at Platen PSI, and not just the force, hence you will need to take into consideration the size of the puck and/or platen sizes of your machine too. The larger the puck at the same pressing mass, the lower the Platen PSI, and hence we have specifically designed the Nectar Pre Press Mini Mould to ensure you get an optimal high yield press.

A general rule of thumb for pressing is between 300-1000 PSI. (More than this and you will increase the chances of blowouts and closing of oil channels, but less than this and it will result in lower yields).

The calculation for the Platen PSI is:

PSI = Pressing Force / Area of Applied Pressure

The diameter of the Nectar Pre Press Mini Mould is: 3cm or 1.1811 inches

So the area of applied pressure when using the Nectar Pre Press Mould is: Pi x r (squared) = 3.14 x 1.1811 x 1.1811 = 4.38 sq inches

The pressing mass is 1.5t = 3000lb.

Platen PSI = 3000 / 4.38 = 685 Platen PSI

What Do You Need to Start Producing Rosin at Home?

You will need the following in order to start extracting rosin:

  1. A diy rosin press machine
  2. Choice of starting material
  3. Rosin filter extraction bags*
  4. Parchment paper (unbleached, if possible)

*Rosin filter extraction bags should only be used when pressing more than 7g otherwise yields may be sacrificed.

I’m New to Rosin Extraction, Which Machine Should I Buy?

Our Nectar Pollen Press, with a plate size of 5cm x 7.6cm and temperatures up to 150°c, is suitable for those new to pollen press machines and is an easier device to learn with, whilst still providing a pressure large enough for pressing up to 7g.

Our Nectar Pollen Twist, with a plate size of 6cm x 12cm and temperatures up to 250°c, is suitable for those who want a press that fits onto a counter-top and who do not want to hook up an air compressor.

How Safe is a Rosin Press Machine?

The solvent-less extraction of a rosin press machine is one of the safest methods of extraction in the industry. It is non-volatile extraction, meaning it does not use any strong chemicals such as butane, ethanol or CO2; which produces a natural and pure rosin concentrate. It is this primary reason that rosin press usage is making waves in the extract market.

Solvent extraction methods on the other hand produce higher yields but involve a risk of injury and negative impacts on health due to requiring specialist machines that handle volatile chemicals. Moreover, to carry out solvent pressing, you have to comply with strict health and safety regulations so it’s a much larger operation.

All in all, solvent-less pressing using a small rosin press machine is a cleaner and safer process with minimal risks.

Due to the advantages of rosin press machines and their home-usability, rosin is rapidly gaining popularity and becoming poised to become the forerunner in the extracts market.

Are Rosin and CBD the Same?

The short answer is that it depends on the material being pressed. If you’re pressing CBD only buds then the rosin produced will be a CBD concentrate. When pressing cannabis, the rosin produced will be a concentrated form of cannabis which will be made up of approximately 60-70% THC and other cannabinoids such as CBD.

Moreover, when pressing a kitchen herb such as lavender, then rest assured a lavender essential oil rosin will be produced.

Rosin is a great way of consuming CBD without the worries of solvent extraction used in the extraction of CBD. Due to the potency of rosin extracts, and the preservation of terpenes, it’s an appealing option with smaller quantities going further. The rich cannabinoid and terpene content of rosin make it a popular choice among herbalists. Even the best rosin press machine will produce approximately 25% yield, meaning that for every 4g of material put into the machine, 1g of rosin will come out. This may not sound great but given the potency and high concentration of active elements within the rosin, much less product is needed for the same desired effects.
